Thanks for all the feedback recently on linux on Xilinx. I think I understand it now: PPC linux is faster and technically superior but monte vista has a strangle hold on the source and tools which discourages anybody from using it. uClinux/microblaze is slower but more open source and easier to get a system up and running with. Is that about the picture? Also, I was wondering if any...

If I want the Linux version of BaseX, do I have to do something special when I order it? Or is there just a single product that includes both Windows and Linux versions? The online store doesn't seem to have any provision for specifying the platform. I'd hate to spend the money and wind up with a version I can't use. I just installed ISE 8.1 on Linux and these are my first impressions: * Project Navigator finally feels like a native Linux program. Previous versions often felt unresponsive and slow. With this version I no longer feel an immediate urge to build everything with Makefiles. This is great! * Impact does not work out of the box with kernel version 2.6.15.1. I had to download linuxd...

Hi all, I have managed to get the Xilinx command line tools running on linux under wine, however last night while trying to program my device I hit a bit of a wall. After reading the archives of this group, I see that that the iMPACT tool won't run under linux. I have a home made parallel III cable and am trying to program an XC9536 CPLD. How are other people doing this? Thanks so mu...

Hi, I have an old Xilinx XChecker Serial cable which has served me well. Apparently (not that I can tell) and unfortunately, it is not supported in the newer ISE 7.1i tools. Which cable do you guys suggest to use? My only real restriction is that it needs to work with Linux / Linux versions of the ISE 7.1i tools. USB cables seem too flaky, but maybe that's changed? I'm also wonderi...

Setting up MicroBlaze-uClinux on new FPGA board is a matter of hours - with PPC linux, well there are gurus around claiming that it can be done within 4 hours - so far I have been very sceptical against such claims mainly as I had until 10 minutes ago never created a Xilinx FPGA PPC system with linux booting capability So my schedule was 1 New V4 PPC system with EDK (complete from scrat...

I recently bought a Digilent Nexys 2 board, and after a few days of research got to the point where I can successfully program it over USB from a Linux host without the use of a separate (and expensive!) JTAG interface. Google told me even before I purchased the board that this is a very common requirement; it seems that I'm not the only one interested in linux-hosted FPGA development. The ...

Friends, I have been using the Xilinx tools ISE, EDK in Windows environment. But now planning to use Linux PC for running ISE and EDK. I am curious, which platform (Windows or Linux) is good for Xilinx tools? I am planning to use the ISE and EDK in GUI mode, not command line mode. Linux version would be Red hat Enterprise WS version 4.0 (64-bit). Thank you. Best regards, Muthu

Although Altera's Quartus II is officially only supported on (by now) rather old Linux releases (SUSE Enterprise Linux 9, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 4), up to Quartus 7.0, it also used to work quite well in practice on more recent distributions (openSUSE 10.2, Fedora Core 6, etc.). However, the new Quartus 7.1 fails badly on both openSUSE 10.2 and Fedora Core 6. It only opens (after th...

Hey all, A quick note on getting EDK 6.2 to work on (a modern distribution) Linux. Since I am using a "non-xilinx-supported Linux distribution," Xilinx hotline would not help me in this matter. However, I believe this problem _may_ apply to those running the supported distributions. After getting the EDK running (see tips below) when I attempted to compile a design using a licensed c...
