Hi All, I successfully ported Linux to the powerpc on a virtex-ii pro board. Now I'm having trouble writing sample applications that can test devices on the board (switches, LEDs, etc). Is there a way that we can port elf files generated by EDK to run on Linux? I'm able to cross compile simple programs using standard C libraries, but things don't work out when I use Xilinx libraries. I've ...

Well, John McCluskey and Kamal were right -- the reg code I had was for Foundation with ISIM. A new code for Foundation without ISIM works under Linux! Xilinx: This might be something to add to an FAQ on Foundation ISE Linux installation. Just wondering, is it normal for the installer to finish and not add any icons or anything? I found the ISE binary in one of the folders and ex...

Hi All, We've got a few Celoxica RC1000 FPGA boards that we'd like to use within a Linux environment. Has anyone had any luck compiling the drivers for a 2.6 kernel. The latest drivers I've been able to find (0.9.25) were written in 1998 and make use of a lot of deprecated header files. I'd love to hear if anyone has one working within an up-to-date linux environment. Many Than...

Now that Xilinx has released Microblaze 7.0 with an optional MMU (in EDK 9.2), has anyone started working on a Linux port? There's already a uClinux port to Microblaze with no MMU, but for some applications it would be nice to run "normal" Linux.

Hi I'd like to announce the availability of a Spartan 3E FPGA development board that, while usable under Windows, is particularly easy to use under Linux. The reason for it's Linux friendliness is that it uses standard USB-serial for downloads. It does not need or use JTAG dongles or drivers. To the host it looks like a FTDI USB-Serial port. The other reason it is a nice system for...

Hi, I'm picking up FPGA/CPLD design after a brief introduction in school a long time ago. My tool setup is the utilities supplied by Xilinx ISE 7.1 on Linux, with Icarus Verilog and gtkwave for pre and post synthesis simulation. Am I correct in thinking that Xilinx left some of the built in simulation capability out of the Linux version of their Webpack? Anyone else out there in the...

Hi, I have just started out with some VHDL in school and would like to have something at home to play with. I'm not sure of CPLD vs FPGA for my use, but CPLD feel more suited for smaller projects I guess. My question is how Linux is supported as developmentplatform? I just installed Quartus II Web Edition 9.1 on linux. I compiled a simple test project and only then I noticed that simulation is unsupported! It's supported on the Windows version, so how come this discrepancy? Are we supposed to dump each and every edit onto the board and debug on the board? They might as well not offer the Web Edition on linux at all.

I noticed that the Xilinx webpack version of ISE now runs in Linux. I seem to recall in the past that the webpack was a Windows only tool, so this seems like a signficant shift. However, I'm looking down the barrel ...

The Altera Quartus II 7.0 software is officially only supported under Red Hat Linux Enterprise 3 and 4 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 9. It also works under the newer openSUSE Linux 10.2, but there are a few quirks: - Quartus hangs sometimes in a futex() system call when starting up. Aborting it with Ctrl-C and restarting it again is the only workaround I know so far. - Quartus...
