Digilent Nexys 2 Issue

Started by Unknown January 7, 2009
Good Morning,

I have just acquired a Nexys 2 dev board but am having problems
connecting to it. I have followed the instructions for the Adept Suite
installation, but when I run ExPort, the device is not present. When I
configure and choose to 'add module', it is not listed as one of the
connected USB modules. The device is being detected by Windows as
'ONBOARD USB', and the attempted automatic driver installation fails.
Is there a specific driver I should be using? I used one of these
boards last year on another computer and don't remember having any
issues with this, but it comes up in my Windows Hardware Manager as an
exclamation mark error, called ONBOARD USB.

Thanks,
Regan
Furthermore, the board does not seem to pass the onboard diagnostics
boot sequence. The switches control the LEDs, but the 7segs are dim
and don't say PASS nor FAIL nor RUN, and there is no sign of a 'snake
game' that should commence once the diags are done. Do you think I may
have inherited a dead board?
Good day, I have just purchased one of these myself and have the same
issue. Mine didn't come with any CD and I had to download the Adept
software.

I have emailed Digilentinc support as I think there is a driver issue.

If you check the Device Instance in device manager it shows up as
follows:

USB\VID_1443&PID_0005

In the INF file for the driver it seems to be looking for

USB\VID_1443&PID_0003
or
USB\VID_1443&PID_0001

I tried changing the INI file to PID_0005 and it did detect the driver
and install it but Export won't find any jtag scan chain devices.

The first one is a USB module and the second is a USB cable. I have
tried both and neither work.

I am awaiting a reply from Digilentinc.

Regards
Dave...

Which version of Windows? Normally Adept SDK should be installed first, which installs USB drivers before you ever connect the Nexys2 to the computer. If you can system restore back prior to the auto-install and try again you may have some luck. Adept v2.0 is on the way I am told. You may wish to try an early version of V2.0 which happens to be inside their CoolrunnerII CPLD kit: http://www.xilinx.com/products/boards/CR-II-SK/CRII_LStarterKit_ResourceCD_Files.zip As far as other problems in your separate post: Do you have JP9 set to ROM mode when you turn the unit on? Did you buy it new, or second hand? Reason I ask is, can you be sure the self test is still programmed in the ROM? Had no worries with my Nexys2's this end. Red
I have been trying to make my FPGA work with Adept , but even though
it detects the USB....in Transport terminal i am not able to enter any
bits to read or write.....I am using windows vista

Sid
I now have it working with the latest software version.

When I got the board and downloaded the drivers, they didn't include a
driver for the USB interface on my board. This has since been updated
and now it works.

Same with me.

A staff member from Digilent emailed me with that same link, good as
gold now.

I guess they had shipped the boards before the software was ready to go on the website. Have fun. No I can start to have a real go at learning VHDL! Dave...

Ah, so good to see this. I been having issues too: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.arch.fpga/browse_frm/thread/2525ea564e1= deda1# I was worried my board (which passes the onboard diagnostics) was a waste of money: the adept software will not properly initialise the scan chain. Even thought I emailed digilent about it pre-Christmas, I haven't had an email from the with a link to the new software, which I will try tomorrow morning. Hope it fixes my woes. Cheers, Steve

Hrm, it would appear I already had the latest version of adept and export, and using the 2.0 version from the coolrunner package as Red suggested didn't work either. I still can't initalise the scan chain due to too many invalid devices showing up (see my link in the previous post for a detailed account of my problems). At this point I am all out of idea, but would like to ask those if you who have working Nexys2 boards to kindly post: * your OS version * whether you are shorting any pins on the JTAG port * setting of the MODE jumper (jp9) Cheers, Steve
