Hello guys, I just made a quick speed test in ISE 7.1 with a Spartan 3E device. A 32-bit counter runs at 129 MHz in XC3S500E-4, but in a Spartan 3 XC3S400-4 at a higher 168 MHz. Also checked a few other desings, like DDR SDRAM controller, and they all run about 20% slower on Spartan 3Es. I don't get it, isn't 3E series supposed to have the same core as the Spartan 3? Best Regards George ...

About two months ago I've started learning VHDL, CPLD and FPGA. Right from the start I've choosen Spartan-3 (XC3S50) and didn't look at Spartan-II because I wanted to use the latest chip. Now I am making a board with 50 5V TTL inputs and idea was to use the CPLD XC95144XL as a level translator...but I just don't like it. So, now I am trying Spartan-II (XC2S50), which is 5V tolerant, an...

Hi, For the Spartan-II, the preconfiguration pullup resistors were selected by the M2 configuration pin. What about for the Spartan-3? My new design has to connect an ARM7TDMI bus to the SPARTAN-3. I need to make sure my ucLinux will boot correctly, and so make sure about the IO pins states of the SPARTAN-3 on the poweron. Regards, Laurent

Hi, I have a design where a Spartan XL was replaced by a Spartan 3. The FPGA is configured by an ATmega MCU which loads the configuration file into the FPGA. This procedure works fine with the old board and the Spartan XL, but with the Spartan 3 I have the trouble that I never get the DONE signal, after the configuration is done. I see data going over the DIN line into the Spartan 3 ...

Hello all, I am using a Xilinx Spartan II FPGA on a prototype PCI add-in card as the PCI device attached to the bus. According to the Spartan II data sheet it appears that 5V PCI compatible IOs are indeed instantiable which was the very reason for going with a Spartan II in the first place. However, after correlating the appropriate requirements from the PCI spec with what is claimed in...

Hello I want to use Spartan XL FPGA for a project and found out that my installation of the Xilinx ISE 5.2 i (Alliance) does not support this device. I can only install later versions of the Spartan devices and not the XL family. Can I get some suggestions on what I should do to use Spartan XL? I dont want to go to the WebPack Option. Thanks Anup

Hello! I'm a bit ambitious (crazy?) and trying to get a Spartan-3 design talking to a set of DDR2 ICs. I'm exploring my termination options, and I've seen the following: 1. The Spartan-3AN Starter kit terminates all of the DDR2 signals by pulling them to 0.9V through a 50-ohm resistor. The Spartan-3{A, AN, E} series lack DCI on their IOBs. 2. The Spartan-3 (classic) datasheet shows that...

Hi, I'm investigating the possibility to replace an Spartan-2E (xc2s400e) with an Spartan-3E (xc3s1200e) device on a PCB. The core voltage drops from 1.8V to 1.2V. Has anyone experience regarding the footprint differences (easy/hard/impossible to adapt) and any other differences which must be taken into account? Regards, Stefan

Hello, all, I am working on an update for a board that now uses an original 5-V Spartan (XCS30) part. To reduce cost, I'm looking at using the Spartan II XC2S30 part, which is less than half the price. (I'd go with the Spartan IIE, but the smallest is 50K gates, and config bitstream is about double the 2S30's requirement, which negates the price advantage.) Anyway, there are some 512...

Xilinx has three very similar kits: - Spartan-3A Starter Kit, - Spartan-3AN Starter Kit, and - Spartan-3A DDR2 SDRAM Interface Development Kit. Only the latter is promoted as supporting DDR2 @ 400 MHz, but the only difference listed between it and the Spartan-3A Starter Kit is the 133 MHz Crystal Oscillator and the lack of a 16 character, 2-Line LCD display.
